Parrot AR Drone 1.0 introduced back in 2010 and was an immediate hit. Now the Autonomous quatro-copter come in the latest version, with additional flight time, two batteries, and the ability to connect a GPS receiver to it. I've looked at AR Drone 2.0 Power Edition, and their GPS Flight recorder.
Besides AR Drone (fitted with 4 black propellers), the Interior hull Outdoor hull 2 batteries with extra large capacity Battery Charger 4 pcs blue propeller 4 pcs orange propeller 4 pcs red propeller Tools to change propeller Manual Stickers
Besides AR Drone 2.0 kit, so I also received Parrot Flight recorder GPS / Memory module. It was delivered in a small orange box with the classic orange stripes as we know it from airplanes 'black' box.
AR Drone has basically had the same design since it was introduced. It's a Drone with four propellers, each in their carbon fiber rod. The body is made of a sturdy, but lightweight, foam material reinforced with plastic on the most exposed places. Should we fly outdoors, you put the outdoor hull of which is held on with magnets. Outdoor hull covers only the body of the drone. Should you fly indoors, you put the indoor hull on. It is something foam block more comprehensive, covering all four propeller with a ring of foam, so they are protected if you had to hit something with them. In the nose of the AR Drone 2.0 sits a HD camera with wide-angle lens to record the view from drone in flight. foam block At the bottom sits a camera in low resolution, which is used to drone can see if the driver with the wind when flying low, and uses the information to correct the flight. You can shoot from it, but the image quality can not really used for anything. On the underside, we also find an ultrasonic transmitter and an ultrasonic receiver. They are used to determine the height foam block of the ground exactly when AR Drone flying low, or have been told to countries.
It manages the AR Drone with his mobile or tablet. You must download an application called AR Free Flight, and it exists for Android and iOS. When AR Drone gets inserted the battery, so it creates a WiFi which you have to connect to his mobile / tablet, and then start Free Flight application.
In Free Flight, you can choose which way you want to control it, I chose the classic "joysticks" for each thumb. It gives a little challenges in the beginning since they are drawn on the screen foam block so you do not quite feel for where they are, without looking down on the screen once in a while. In order to facilitate it's as simple as quiet drone on a flat surface with good space, and then press the Take-off button. Once in the air then lands just as easily by pressing the Landing button. During the flight, the video from the drone camera broadcast live down to your phone / tablet. After being a little more brave, you can turn a setting in Free Flight makes the drone freak around himself up when you double-tap the screen! foam block
My first trip with AR Drone 2.0 Power edition was on a calm day, a wide place. I sat Flight recorder to the USB connector into drone, and then I put the power and started the Free Flight on my iPad. I pressed the "Take off" button and 2 seconds foam block after hovering drone good feet above the ground, bum-quiet. Good start I thought, and began to maneuver around a bit with the low altitude. I have flown a lot RC airplane before, and a little bit helicopter, but this was something else entirely. You can feel the AR Drone flying "self" and that as a pilot just give the message of what it should. This means that it sometimes does something unexpected, without having notified on it. But it is the system in AR Drone who have discovered that either driver or compensate for wind gusts. If you have flown very RC planes, it takes just some getting used to. In return, it is quite delicious that you just can drop controls, and then notify the drone itself out, stop and hold the position. After I got a little confidence then I started to fly higher. I had not quite kept track of the time, but suddenly I got a battery alarm on the iPad, which was only 15% power back on AR Drone. I thought I probably foam block had better come down in height and countries. But ... after what seemed like 10 seconds, so off AR Drone simply too propellers! So it fell from around 15 meters. The only thing that broke, one of the sprocket that drives the propeller. A repair only cost 25 kroner (and a few days of waiting on the mail). It was not the best ending to my first flight with AR Drone. But then I found out that the AR Drone is fairly foam block easy to repair, and that the pieces are not very expensive. On subsequent trips the same thing happened foam block fortunately did not, but I was also very careful to keep an eye on the battery indicator in Free Flight application.
